William Rascoe's estate was being settled in 1799 in Hyde County. I am not sure exactly when he died but believe it was after the 1790 census was taken. In the State Census of 1786, William Rascoe household was enumerated in Joseph Gibbs Company at Mattamaskeet. In his household was 1 white male between the ages of 21 and 60; 3 white male under 21 or over 60; and 4 white females of all ages. The next household to him in 1786 was that of Robert Gibbs.
An abstract of William Rascoe estate in 1799 copies and sent to me by a cousin several years ago states: "William Rascoe dies, John Taylor and wife Rachel, Administrators togater with John Rascoe. Sueing Robert Gibbs, Jr. for something regarding the estate of William Rascoe but it seems to involve Rachel and a contract of marriage to Robert Gibbs, Sr., regarding leaving her a good living after his death and giving her brother William Adams a slave". I do not have any originals of this record that my cousin found at the N.C. Archives in a folder of Hyde County Estate Records. Apparently William Rascoe had died and Rachel either married Robert Gibbs or had a contract to marry him. Robert Gibbs must have died shortly after their marriage ( you say Oct. 24, 1793). Rachel must have married a third time to John Taylor. That Rachel's maiden sur-name was Adams is proven by the above record with names her brother as William Adams.
I am sure that William Rascoe was a son of a Daniel Rascoe originally from Northampton County Virginia but who came to Bertie County N.C. between 1750 and 1759. In 1786 Daniel was living in Tyrrell County. William Rascoe did have a son named John Rascoe who married Mary Swindell before 1790. I have not been able to prove who Mary Swindell's parents were. About 1813-14, John and Mary Rascoe migrated with their children to Orange County North Carolina. Most of the Present day Rascoe who live in the Caswell, Durham, Alamance and surounding Counties are descendant of John and Mary Rascoe. I believe that William Rascoe also had a brother named John Rascoe and this John Rascoe had a son named John Rasco. Apparently these two john Rascoe's remained in Hyde County and any Rascoe still in Hyde are their descendants.
What else can you tell me about any of these people?
