The early trains had a stop near the home/office of Dr. Bartlett Durham, known as Durham's stop. The few establishments in the area were noted for their lively (often illegal) entertainment.
Following the Civil War, the huge increase in manufacturing in the area caused the development of communities around the factories and an early urban center.
In 1881, the county was officially formed from Wake, Orange, and Granville Co. with the city of Durham as its hub.
