Durham was a part of Orange County, NC prior to 1881. You will find many census pages that list North or South Durham in the 1880 census for the area. I also suspect that at least part of Mangum Township may have been included in the formation of the city because I have found various individuals who were there in 1880 would show up as Durham County by 1900. There is a long colorful history of the city at the following site, which explains that Durham was established originally as a railroad station in land supplied by Dr. Bartlett Durham in 1849.
