I am the grandaughter of Hubert Vernon Harrell born in East Lake, NC in January or February of 1917. His mother was known to me as Betty Morgan, who after what I was told was a divorce, married a man named Parker.

We traveled alot when I was small to East Lake in the 1960's. I remember meeting an Uncle Roy who facinated me because he lived on a oneway dirt road with a small canal running along side it. My grandfather said Uncle Roy and everyone traveled by boat and not car along the canal.

I remember meeting an Aunt Belvy that my grandfather said had a glass eye. I also remember visiting people named Tweedy and Twiford but I dont remember any first names.

I remember a small wooden church in East Lake that was not really used, with a couple large cement slabs in the church yard among other grave markers that I was told were graves of relatives and that people left local conch-type shells on. I remember old hurricane lamps hanging from the ceiling inside. My grandfather told me sometime in the 1980's that the church had been renovated and was in use again. Im not sure but I think it was named 'East Lake Baptist Church'.

My grandfather had said the Harrells came to East Lake on a land grant, but 'family history' evolving over time the way it does, I do not know if this is family myth or fact.

I would love to learn more about my grandfather's family. I have fond memories of the trips we used to take to visit with his family and how proud he was of being a Harrell.

He passed away in the early 1990's, and now that I am interested in this history I am no longer able to ask.

I responded to your post because many of the names are very familiar to me. I grew up with the impression that Betty Morgan was Wilson Harrell's first wife.

Needless to say, I would love to know more.
