I am researching the Watlington's, as I believe I am descended from George Wall who married Nancy Ann Watlington. I believe Nancy Ann Watlington Wall to be the daughter of Rebecca (some say Rebecca Tatum) and her husband Francis Watlington. Francis died in the 1770's in Halifax County VA. His wife became guardian of their minor children; Nancy Ann, Armistead, Edward R. and Frances (a daughter). Rebecca then married Benjamin Shelton 06 Nov 1780 in Halifax County VA. Additional Guardianship records then list Rebecca as widow of Francis Watlington and that she is now the wife of Benjamin Shelton.

The Sheltons, along with the young adult Watlington children appear to have moved to Caswell County NC by 1790. Armistead Watlington married Mary Brooks 14 Apr 1790 and is enumerated in the 1790 Census. Benjamin Shelton is also enumerated on the same page. Francis and Rebeckah's daughter Frances Watlington married Charles Price in Caswell County 20 Feb 1792.

In 1799 Benjamin Shelton died. In his will he names his wife Rebeckah and sons Leonard and Clever. In the 1800 Census, Rebeckah has one male in her household age 16-25.

By the will, there is no way to tell if Clever and Leonard are Benjamin's children with Rebeckah or if he was married prior to his marriage to Rebeckah.

My Wadlington Wall, who I believe to be the son of George Wall and Nancy Ann Watlington, married Mary "Polly" Hickman in Jefferson County, Tennessee 18 Sep 1816. Polly's sister, Sarah Hickman married Clever Shelton in Jefferson County, Tennessee 03 Aug 1808.

In the 1830 Census of Jefferson County TN, Wadlington Wall and Clever Shelton are enumerated next to one another. Both are listed as aged 40 to 50. From the 1850 Census I know Wadlington Wall was born c 1790 VA, so he would be about 40 in this 1830 census. However, if Clever is the son of Benjamin, he may be the same one in the 1800 Census of NC aged 16-25. From both of these census records we can deduce that he was born between 1780-1790 (1830 Census) or 1775-1784 (1800 Census) thus leaving his birth between 1780-1784. If this is true, then that would mean Clever is the son of Rebeckah and Benjamin Shelton, since they married 06 Nov 1780 (unless Benjamin's wife died in childbirth and he immediately married Rebeckah). If he is Rebeckah's son, then of course he was not be born in 1780 because of the marriage date, which would narrow this down to 1781-1784.

Of course there is a possibility that Leonard was the one in the household in 1800, but I have yet to find him in any census.

I do know that this elder Clever Shelton most likely died before 1840. I believe his wife Sarah is in Rhea County TN in 1840. Clever (Jr) appears there in the 1850 Census as head of household. By 1860 Clever (Jr) was in Hamilton Co TN.

Just thought I would post this information to see if anyone has anything to add. Or any information on any of these Watlington's and Shelton's.
