The Christenbury's were long-time neighbors of the Hawkins in Mecklenburg County in the mid-nineteenth century. Having pushed my Hawkins line back further through Y-DNA testing I have been following William Hawkins and his sons in Orange County, Rowan County, and Person County between about 1765 and 1820. The Christenbury name shows up in the latter location also. In a 1776 description of the seventeen districts that made up Orange County, the eleventh district, St. Lukes, includes a James Quistenbury. This area was located in the part of the county that later became Person County. Ephraim Hawkins lived in this district and shows up on tax lists there in the 1790s and 1810s. On the taxable property list for 1814, in Capt Hargis' company, where he lived, is also listed an Aaron Christenbury. source: Katherine Kerr Kendall, Person County North Carolina Compilations. |
