Subject: Inaccurate Data [Incident: 071027-000739]

Dear Folks:

I have been fighting this issue for almost two years.

Please be careful when you use the Ancestry.com North Carolina Birth Database. It is corrupted.

It shows people obviously born in Caswell County to have been born in Catawba County.

Best regards.

Rick

PS I will continue the battle. If you can help, please do so.

Dear Kimberly:
Thanks for the response, but it is inadequate. You have an entire North Carolina Births database that has captured the wrong county code for thousands of births. Ancestry.com has captured the Catawba County code when it should be the Caswell County code. To say that you have only one way to correct a database is not correct. It may be the only way that I could comment on an error, but Ancestry.com should (and must) revisit this database. From where did you obtain the data? Go back to your source. There you will see the coding error.
Please forward this message to those directly responsible for the North Carolina Births database. There is a real problem that must be addressed.
Please understand that I am not some casual user of the Caswell County data. I am an archivist, historian, and the webmaster for the Caswell County Historical Association and the Caswell County NC GenWeb. I have an obligation to those who are researching Caswell County to make sure that Ancestry.com does something about this massive error. I will not give up until the database is corrected in its entirety; so you might as well involve others now.
Thanks and best regards.

Dear Rick,

We appreciate your message.

Regrettably, this is the only method we offer to report errors with a specific database.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

You are missing the point. The entire database is corrupted. It shows thousands (perhaps tens of thousands) of people as being born in Catawba County, North Carolina, when they actually were born in Caswell County, North Carolina. To suggest that I comment on each record individually is ridiculous. Please send this issue higher up the chain of authority. It is a major problem that is affecting all doing research on Caswell County, North Carolina.

Dear Rick,

We appreciate your message.

Can I add or edit comments or list corrections needed for a specific record found in a database?
In our continued efforts to provide an improved experience for our users, we have created an
online error reporting system, called Customer Contributed Content. When you are viewing the record for a specific individual where this feature
is available, you will see a Comments and Corrections link located in the right Page
Tools column, as show in the image to the right.

Note: This link is not available on any page where
an image appears, but rather on the index for an individual whose image you may be viewing. For reporting errors with images themselves, please
click here. Please use this feature to submit this suggestion and any future corrections.
Once you have clicked the Comments and Corrections link, you will be presented with three options, depending on what type of issue you want to report. Each of these is explained in further detail below.
Click the image to see it located
on an Ancestry page.

Note: A new window is typically created when submitting either a User Comment or an Error Report (discussed below). In both of these cases, you will want to make sure you do not have software running that blocks pop-up windows. Otherwise, the appropriate form may not appear for you to indicate what error you are seeing.
Alternate names
You can provide corrections or additions for a record, such as for:
       Transcription errors
Birth or maiden names (e.g., if a known name change has occurred)
Nicknames (to increase search options that will locate this record)
Name variations (if these occur for records)
Incorrect originals (i.e., the original record is incorrect)
To indicate an alternate (or corrected) name exists, follow these simple steps:
1.       Click on the Comments and Corrections link from the individual's record page
2.       Click the Add an Alternate Name link on the next page
3.       Enter information in the Given Name and Surname fields
4.       For the Reason, indicate any of those previously described
5.       Provide a brief but helpful Explanation of the information you enter
6.       Click the Submit correction button
User comments
General comments you wish to indicate can be included here. These comments should adhere to the Message Board posting rules. For example, you might include a comment such as the following:
The rest of this family is found under the surname Smythe, though this individual's name is spelled correctly (Smith).
To add a User Comment, please do the following:
1.       Click on the Comments and Corrections link from the individual's record page
2.       Click the Add a Comment link on the next page
3.       Fill in the Subject field with a brief description, such as "Other Family of
John Smith in SSDI"
4.       Fill in the Comment field with information you wish to include as your comment
5.       Fill in the Source field if you have a reference that verifies the information you provide
6.       Indicate your Comment Type as Additional Detail, Contradiction, Question, or Link
7.       Click the Post comment button
Report an error
While some of the above submissions may be classified as errors, those issues you find that cannot be submitted with the above two options (such as an unreadable image, linking to an incorrect image, a missing page, etc.) should be submitted via this third choice. There are two methods for submitting this type of report.
Reporting an Index error
1.       Click on the Comments and Corrections link from the individual's record page
2.       Click the Report an Error link on the next page
3.       Choose the appropriate issue from the Problem type drop-down menu
4.       Enter information in the Description box that better specifies the steps you took to duplicate this error, the text of any error message you may have received, etc.
5.       Click the Submit button to post your error report
Reporting an Image Error
1.       Go to the image where the error occurs, if possible*
2.       Above the image on the right half of the screen, click on the link labeled Having problems viewing this image?
3.       Fill out the form provided, as indicated in Steps 3-5 (for Reporting an Index Error)
* If you cannot get to the image, you can either try to report the error as an Index Error, or you can contact our Member Solutions Department by clicking the Email Ancestry Support tab at the top of this Knowledge Base.
Note: Please understand that fixes to errors on Ancestry are posted firstly in the order of those which affect the greatest number of users, and thereafter in the order in which they are reported. For this reason, fixes for some errors may take longer than others to be posted. We appreciate your patience.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Dear Folks: For over a year now I have attempted to call you the attention of Ancestry.com the serious errors in its North Carolina Birth Index. Thousands of people actually born in Caswell County, North Carolina, are shown as being born in Catawba County, North Carolina. I am the webmaster for the Caswell County Historical Association and the Caswell County NC GenWeb and ask that something be done about this serious problem. I believe the error is in the county code.

Could someone get back to me on this. I can provide examples. Here is one:

North Carolina Birth Index, 1800-2000
about Mary Jane Shelton
Name: Mary Jane Shelton
Date of Birth: 22 Dec 1928
Gender: Female
Race: White
Birth County: Catawba
Parent1 Name: James Maxwell Shelton
Parent2 Name: Margaret Carr Shelton
Roll Number: B_C021_68003
Volume: 7
Page: 964

This person, whom I know personally, was born in Caswell County. She is still alive and well.

Best regards.

Rick
