For about the last several weeks I have been involved in a search for Norwood/Nard Peeler. Norwood was noted in the "SOME AMERICAN PEELERS AND THEIR DESCENDANTS' by Jonnie Peeler Arnold in the "unconnected section" of that book and there was also a short bio in John Welkie Peeler's book "A RECORD AND HISTORY OF THE PEELER FAMILY" compiled and published in 1935. I have had more request for help in trying to find Norwood's parents than any other family. Here is some of the data we have uncovered up until now:
Here is a review of what I believe (or guess) so far on Norwood Peeler. Let me know if you disagree on any of this.
Norwood/Nard Peeler was born ca 1827 in Montgomery County, NC (could have been Orange, Cabrauss, or Rowan).
His father was born 1807 and mother 1810 in one of the above counties. They were of the Lutheran/Monrovan faith as were their ancestors back to Germany.
Norwood married Mary Ann Ridenhour 13 Oct 1848 in Montgomery County, NC. Simpson Copley posted the bond and the clerk in the courthouse collected the bond money and acted as the witness to the transaction. Mary Ann was the dauthter of Moses Ridenhour b 1799 and Elizabeth Pence b 1801. They were married 1816 and had at least 9 children. They were of the township of Ridenhour, Stanley Co NC (after 1841 Stanly was formed from Montgomery County, NC in 1841)
Mary Ann and Norwood had a child named Green W Peeler b 21 Aug 1849 in Misenheimer, Stanly County, NC. Norwood probably never saw his son as he died before 16 Oct 1850 (1850 census) actually he probably died prior to 21 Aug 1849 (Green's birth) . Green married 2 March 1876 Martha Frances Moss b 19 March 1858. Martha's parents were Edward Moss b 16 Feb 1816 Montgomery Co NC and he died 1897 and Christiana Barringer b 2 Jan 1828 and she died 28 Aug 1916. They were the parents of at least 6 children.Green and Martha were the parents of 9 children. Green died 11 Oct 1927 and Martha died 4 June 1904 probably in Misenheimer, NC. As you found Green may have served in the civil war although he would have been only been about 15 years old. NC in the later stages of war were getting desperate for recruites. Three of my ancestors from Ga was recruited for service in NC.
Norwood died at a young age of 20-21 years so it is unlikely that very much records will be found for him. He and Mary Ann may have been living with Moses when he died as I doubt he was able to purchase a house at that time. Mary Ann was found to be living with Moses in the 1850 census with her 1 year old son. Norwood was buried Luther's Lutheran Church in Stanly County, NC. There is a marker near him of a Daniel Ridenhour which I believe may be Mary Ann Ridenhour grandfather John Daniel Ridenhour b 16 April 1777 in Berks County, PA and he died 22 Nov 1865 in Stanly County, NC. Daniel married Elizabeth File b 28 Feb 1779 and she died 19 June 1872.We believe that Rothrock ministered at Luther's Lutheral Church from 1840 to 1845.
Mary Ann Peeler married Samuel Fraley 3 Feb 1869 in Stanly Co NC. Samuel was born 1813 and died 1887. They had at least 3 children. Mary Ann died after 17 Nov 1892 Misenheimer, NC.
I believe, with some careful searching the 1840 census for a man age ca 33 years old with a male ca 12-14 years in Montgomery Co we may find a clue to this family.
I believe that Norwood was a descendant of Christian Peeler. He was in the same area in NC, the Peeler's married into the Copley Family many times in this area and with Samuel Copley making the marriage bond for Norwood and Mary Ann I believe he must have been a close friend of the Peelers or Ridenhours or both.
The above is mearly speculation with what we know as facts and my guess based on those facts. I may be way off base so don't get locked into anything I have noted above. I only wanted this to be a tool in our search for Norwood.
If anyone can shed any light on this difficult search for this family a lot of Peeler families would be very grateful.
