I am seeking information about my Great Grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Massey who was born in North Carolina about 1847 and eventually married Vianna Rice and ended up in Clay County Kentucky.
In the 1850 census I found a Thomas J Masssey who was three years old, living with Polly Massey (aged 35) and a 16 year old female with the last name of Revis. There were no other males in the household.
From the census record Elizabeth "Betsy" Massey appears to have been a close neighbor of Polly at that time living with some of her younger children.
On another message board I recently saw a posting that indicated that Elizabeth Massey had never married, but had given birth to a number of children fathered by Thomas Reavis, (Revis) including a daughter named Polly, who's birthdate corresponds to the age noted above. All of these children kept the last name of Massey.
Thomas Reavis also had several children by his legal wife Mary (Roberts)
An 1873 article in the Ashville Citizen regarding the death of one of the "Massey" children ("Hettie") seems to confirm the truth about this situation and states that Reavis provided property for all of the Reavis and Massey children before his death.
There was also a court case with charges of adultry against Reavis and Betsy Massey in Buncombe County in 1813.
I am looking for any additional information that would confirm that this Polly was actually the mother of my Great Grandfather, and also any facts about who his father might have been, since there were no other males listed in the household.
I would also appreciate any information available about the background of this Elizabeth Massey, who apppears to have been born in 1792 and died after 1870, probably in Madison County.
