Hi Oscar,
I too am researching the Priest/Burney lines. Not getting much on the Priest side.

Think you are my father's first cousin. My father was James Robert Shipman, whose mother was Margaret Priest Shipman, your father Oscar's sister.

Here is information I have found thus far:

My great grandfather Daniel Roland Priest's first wife was a Burney.
My grandmother's death certificate lists her mother as Margaret Catherine Burney.
Your father's death certificate lists his mother as Catherine Burney.
My research shows that a Catherine Elizabeth Burney married Dan Priest.

If this is the Catherine Burney that is my great grandmother, then I can trace her ancestors back to the 1700s.

I am fairly certain that Catherine Elizabeth Burney born 2 April 1876 is my great grandmother. This is the based on my memories of my great great Aunt Carey Elkins, sister to Catherine Elizabeth Burney. I remember being told as a child that Aunt Carey married her sister's husband, James Elkins. This all fits with information I have found on the Burney side of the family.

The following information is corroborated in a pdf file found at

Catherine Elizabeth Burney's parents were John William Burney (6 Aug 1847-11 Dec 1944) and Margaret Shaw (b 25 Mar 1850 d 31 Mar 1929)

John William Burney's parents were Charles Holland Burney (13 Aug 1821-25 Apr 1855) and Catherine Jane Clark (b 13 Oct 1822 d 7 Oct 1903)

Charles Holland Burney's parents were James Burney, Jr (b 1783 d 1854) and Sarah Elenore Council

James Burney Jr's parents were James Burney, Sr (b abt 1755 d abt 1800) and Elizabeth

James Burney Sr's parents were Simon Burney (b abt 1733 d bet 1783-1793) and Elenore Sarah Shipman

Simon Burney's father was William Burney Sr (b abt 1710 d aft 1 Sep 1760)

Simon Burney's wife, Elenore Sarah Shipman, was a great Aunt many times removed on my grandfather's paternal side but also something like my 5th great Grandmother. Her parent's were Daniel Shipman and Elenore who apparently established the Shipman line in Bladen County. Think that makes Daniel Shipman my 6th great Grandfather on both my Grandfather and Grandmother's side. Also, he would be you 5th(?) great Grandfather.

Also, looks like Simon Burney's brother William Burney, Jr ( b abt 1740 d aft Jun 1783) married Elenore Sarah Shipman's sister, Elizabeth Shipman. That would make them our great Aunt and Uncle many times removed.

I got this information from several other family trees, primarily Burneys, plus piecing together marriage records, birth records and census records.

On the Priest side, I am fairly certain that my great Grandfather/your Grandfather, Daniel Roland Priest was the son of David Lewis Priest and Lucinda Council. There is some evidence that David Lewis Priest's parents were Neill and Margaret Clark--hard to determine any lineage before Neill and Margaret--have seen possibilty of a Archibald Priest or Gilbert Priest being David Lewis Priest's father.

Census records indicate that Daniel Roland Priest had a brother, Colin Priest. A listing of grave markers in Mt Zion Baptist Church Cemetery show a Colin Priest (b 4 Aug 1872 d 6 Jan 1924) and his wife Bessie Smith (b 2 Sep 1877 --) Census records show they had 2 children in the 1910 census--Adair Priest (b 13 Jan 1909 (?) d 26 Feb 1911) and Harold Priest (b 28 May 1906 d 15 Jun 1920). Both are buried at Mt Zion Cemetery as are both my paternal grandparents, William and Margaret Shipman.
