The information came from Absolomís discharge papers that are at the National Archives, Kew.
National Archives reference: WO97/1795/62.

Details of how to obtain records are in the NAís research guide British Army: soldiers' discharge and pension records 1702-1913 available on their web site at www. nationalarchives.gov.uk > records > In-depth research guides.

As to finding out more information, the lack of the battery numbers in his record will make it difficult to track, although the location from census and childrenís births will help establish where he was.

The Nafziger Collection of Orders of Battle from 1600-1945 [available online] will help identify some of the batteries he served in from the Brigade listing [only covers RA in detail from around 1858 Ė 1872?] and you need to first download the finding aid pdf, then search that for year of and then copy the code], otherwise it will be a case of trawling through any Muster Books & Pay Lists from a known starting point and working back/forwards. With musters not being online that will be difficult and expensive if you canít get to Kew.

Just looking at what is known and adding information from Nafziger I quickly checked, itís possible to find pictures of many of the forts and barracks online and sites like the Palmerston Forts Society [undergoing a revamp at present] have details of weaponry and layouts. A web search for Cork Harbour Forts throws up an article ďMilitary Barracks Co CorkĒ that Iím sure youíll find interesting.

Re William Greening in Boer War.

The only one I have found online who was wounded in the Boer war was in the Gloucester Regiment, checking his papers showed his father was Henry Greening. None of the other William Greening papers I checked could have been Absolomís son.

Iíve also sent you a personal message that you should have now, if not click on my name and contact me on email shown.
