A biography/family history and portrait of Alfred J. Trodick are included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 702 & 703.

Alfred J. was born, 29 Oct 1874, twelfth of thirteen children of John and Bridget (Kelley) Trodick. The father, John Trodick, was born in Brittany (France) in 1820. He served many years in the British navy. For 41 years he was a steward on vessel, part of the time as captain, and for that reason his children were born in various countries. He came to the US and first settled in Chicago, moving to Wolf Creek, MT, in 1887, where he was in the hotel business. He died, 6 Nov 1916, Wolf Creek, MT. Bridget Kelley Trodick was born in Ireland in 1842 and died in England in 1878.

Alfred J. Trodick was educted in the public schools of Chicago, but at age 12 he went to New York City and for eighteen months was a cabin boy on the steamship "City of Paris", sailing between NYC and Liverpool. Then for one season Alfred was Anderson's Circus which took him to San Francisco, where he became a stowaway on a steamer bound for New Orleans. He was discovered and on their arrival at New Orleans Alfred joined Robinson's Circus as a tightrope walker. Later, at Omaha, NE, he joined Forepaugh's Circus and remained with them until they reached New York City. He enlisted in the US Navy from which he was discharged in 1889. He enlisted in the US Infantry and served in Nebraska & Wyoming and in 1893 was honorably discharged in Yellowstone Park. In 1894, he located to a homestead claim on Wolf Creek, MT. He set up an athletic training camp which he operated for four years. He entered employment with the Great Northern Railway as superintendent of a stone quarry getting out stone for railroad construction work. He was with Great Northern for five years. In 1909, he moved to Great Falls, MT, and joined the fire department as a fireman and rose to first captain of the department until 1 Jul 1913. He was then appointed a sergeant of police, a position he held until 26 Jul 1916, when he was made chief of the fire department.

On 5 Jun 1895, Alfred married Emma Rhein, who was born in Columbus, OH. She died 13 Nov 1918. Alfred and Emma had three children: Harry John, Margaret, Helen.

In the 1930 Federal Census, Alfred, age 54, is married to Vesper B., age 39, born in Illinois. It appears they were married 9 years.

Alfred J. Trodick died Dec 1959, Flathead, MT, where he had resided since 1934. He was buried at the Custer National Cemetery at Hardin, MT. (Ref: Daily Inter Lake, Kalispell, MT, 29 Dec 1959)
