According to a friend of mine, The LDS Church has a microfilm of Oktibbeha County Probate Records from before the courthouse fire of 1880.
James H. Spencer died in probably Oktibbeha County between 1853-1856. According to Oktibbeha County probate case #255 listed on this film, James' widow, Harriet O. Spencer, remarried to Shackleford W. Cordin. In October 1856, they were appointed guardians for Harriet's minor children by Spencer: John W. Spencer and Susan Spencer, both under the age of 14. Due to their problems keeping bonds, W.F. Yeager was eventually appointed to replace the Cordins in February 1860. The children were listed on the 1860 census for Oktibbeha as the "minor heirs of James Spencer", living with Yeager. (See my GenForum query below about Yeager.)
Does anyone know anything about Shackleford and Harriet Cordin? Their name has also been spelled Cardin and Cardine.
The probate records regarding this transfer of guardianship are posted on the Oktibbeha County Wills Board at this address: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ms/OktibbehaWill?read=9
