my granpa Nix was a Captian in the civil war. He organized the "Liberty Guards". His name was Samuel J.W. Nix. He also was postmaster general of liberty as well as owner and editor of the "AMITE DEMOCRAT" newspaper. He was also an attorney. He was married to Mary Louisia Talbert, Daughter of Thomas Talbert. Samuel was murdered in about Nov. of 1867 in an argument with his brother-in-law whose last name was Fish. They were argueing over Lincoln's Amancipation Act when Fish grabbed the fire poker and stabbed my grandfather. This was at the Talbert Plantation which is on the road that talbert cemetery is on.Tommy Talbert, from Liberty is in possession of the firepoker as far as I know. Samuel was born in E. Feliciana Parish,La. in 1823. His parents were William Nix and Elizabeth Bennett Nix. They were married in same place as Samuel's birth. Samuel was wounded at the Battle of Shilo on April,6th and resigned from service 2 years later never fully recovering from his wound. This is all I know for now but I hope it helps. Nita
