Margo, from Rootsweb's WorldConnect site and census records, John Thomas Reed's parents were Solomon Reed and Susannah Hollingsworth.

1860 Gasconade Co., MO:
Solomon Reed, age 48, b. NC, farmer
Susanna, age 36, b. KY
Manerva, age 22, b. IN
Alexander, age 20, b. IN
John, age 8, b. MO (John Thomas)
William, age 5, b. MO
Susan Hollingsworth, age 12, b. MO

1870 Gasconade Co., MO:
Solomon Reed, age 59, b. NC, farmer
Susanna, age 50, b. KY
Joel, age 37, b. IN
Lovewood (??)son, age 8, b. MO
John T., age 17, b. MO, farm laborer
G.S. Hollandsworth, age 21, farm laborer

1880 Gasconade Co., MO:
Thomas Reed, age 26, b. MO, father NC, mother KY, farmer
Ellen, age 26, b. MO, parents England (Ellen Agnes Nixon)
Mary, age 7 mos., b. MO
James Nixon, age 16, brother-in-law, b. MO

It appears to me that Solomon Reed was married before Susannah since Joel, Minerva, and probably Alexander were too old to be her children. And it looks like Solomon was in Indiana before coming to Missouri.

All census records state that Solomon was a farmer, not a school teacher.
