Thanks you for the help. I'll try to dig further into the Richard you have located. The Mathews name may have been changed due to the families connection the raids across the border into Kansas during the Bleeding Kansas era.
Allen and his brother John (founder of Little Town or present day Oswego) were certainly confederate sympathizers and were part of several well known raids.
Several of their friends were known to "own" land in an area in Cherokee County KS that was Indian Territory and they were not supposed to be there.
