Thank you for your post. I think these records are not for our James M Gross of Texas County County, MO. His death may have been abt 1873 (place unkn) shortly after his 2nd marriage in 1872 to Mary E. Vandiver/Vandion. Records for our James M Gross follows, including the Civil War record: Information from Gross family website: http://members.fortunecity.com/shariben/family/jonathan.html 5. James M.2 Gross (Jonathan1) was born in Jackson County, AL September 15, 1837. James died 1873 at 35 years of age. He married twice. He married Jane (Pheba?) Younger in MO, bef. 1860. Jane was born in TN 1841. Jane died abt. 1863. He married Mary E. Vandion (see Mary E. Vandiver information in previous post) in Texas, Missouri, USA, July 14, 1872. The following military information came from the notes of Steve Yerby and Helen Smith: J. M. Gross served as a Private, Company L, Freeman's Regiment of Missouri Cavalry, CSA. His unit was surrendered on May 11, 1865 by Brigadier General M. Jeff. Thompson, C.S.A., Commanding, to Major General G.M. Dodge, U.S.Army, Commanding the Department of the Missouri. J.M. Gross was paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas, June 5, 1865. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army in Arkansas. Age; 28, eyes; dark, hair; dark; complexion; dark, height; 5' 8". Born; Alabama. Also serving in this unit was Caswell Gilmore, James' brother-in-law. (RG133 Office of the Adjutant General, Jefferson City, MO.) (Muster & Descriptive Roll of Prisoners of War belonging to the Army of the Northern Sub-District of Arkansas) (Card #44181701) 1860 Texas County, MO Census [P81]: James Gross 22 (farmer), Pheba 19, Newton M. 2/19. James M. Gross and Jane (Pheba?) Younger had the following children: 24 i. Frederick3 Gross (living status unknown). + 25 ii. Newton Montgomery Gross was born April 18, 1860. + 26 iii. Clayborn F. Jackson Gross was born December 27, 1862. |
