I doubt there would be any U. S. government record regarding their fate. Johann probably would have informed Joseph's widow of their reason for delayed return, but by the 1915 Kansas State Census she was already remarried and living at Galena.
Galena Kansas was founded because of the lead and zinc mines there, and in his 1914 passport application Johann listed Mine Superintendent as his occupation. This was an important position and there may have been something published in a Galena or Cherokee County newspaper regarding their fate, if anyone knew. Johann may also have owned Galena property, and there should be a record of its disposal if he never returned.
I suggest you contact the Cherokee County Kansas Genealogical-Historical Society, email: firstname.lastname@example.org
