My Great Grandmother, Minnie Allerton, was the daughter of William Allerton and Ellen Delia Reeves according to the information she provided for Social Security and was born in Bangor, Van Buren Co, MI on 11/20/1880.
I've got no information on her parents and lineage. VanBuren county didn't have the birth record. I can't find a marriage license even though I know the date and supposed location - 3/17/1897 Allegan Co, MI.
I've looked for all of the Allerton's for that era in the state of Michigan and Indiana census records and really haven't found a fit for her father William Allerton. There was a William B Allerton living in Union Twp, Huntington, IN in 1870 and with his brother James in Constantine Twp, St. Joseph Co, MI in 1880. There was even a child Minnie, age 2 on the 1880 census in St. Joseph Co but this was his brother's James child who died at the age of 19 in 12/29/1897. This William marries Catherine Sarah Burger on 11/14/1886 and there's no indication he had previously married.
There's another William Chamberlain Allerton (b.11/8/1831) in Almena Twp, Vanburen county but he was married to Elizabeth LaFarge at the time of Minnie's birth and would have been much older than her. The only other William Allerton was William F Allerton (b. 9/11/1870 Hartford Twp, Vanburen Co, MI) who would have only been a child when Minnie was born. So bottomline, I don't know who her father William Allerton could have been. So on to her mother.
I've found an Ellen D Reeves on the 1870 Decatur village, VanBuren Co census of age 17 who could be Minnie's mother but she disappears from any further census. Her mother was listed as Jane Reeves - husband not shown. Jane is believed to be Jane Beeson with husband being Thomas S Reeves who died during the civil war. Jane remarried on 1/16/1871 to Henry S Graham in VanBuren Co and possibly again to Alvis Keene around 1885. She apparently divorced because Henry S Graham remarries just prior to 1880 to a Susannah so Jane doesn't show up on the 1880 census. There is a Mary J Keene (aka Mary Jane)listed on the 1890 veteran's census in Bloomingdale Twp, Vanburen Co as the widow of Thomas Reeves. An Alvis and Jane Keene are still on the 1900 and 1910 Bloomingdale Twp, VanBuren Co census. Alvis dies sometime between 1910 and 1920 and Jane Keene still shows up on the 1920 Bloomindale twp census. But because I can't find Jane on the 1880 census or her daughter Ellen Delia and the name changes that happen via the marriages, I'm not certain of much of anything.
Right now, best guess regarding Minnie's parents is that one or both died while she was an infant and she may have been put up for adoption. The first time Minnie shows up on a census is in 1900 Star Twp, Antrim Co, MI using an assumed name of Minnie VanCamp living with future husband Clayton Billington. All remaining censuses up until her death on 12/8/1976 have her in Charlevoix Co, MI as Minnie Billington. The 1910 census shows her as being married as of 3/17/1897 even though the 1900 census contradicts this. Certain official documents such as children's birth certificates/death certificates sometimes show her maiden name as VanCamp rather than Allerton reinforcing the adoption scenario. But since the 1890 census was destroyed, I don't know what happened during her childhood.
So back to the beginning... I'm hoping that somebody might know more in VanBuren County or have suggestions as to how to proceed.
