Carol- Very interesting... I was told by my great uncle and of course the family memoirs that Jacob could not join any military because one, he left Finland for the US so he couldn't join with Finland, and two, because he hadn't been naturalized yet, he couldn't sign up in the USA- hence, no WWI draft card. Hmm.... I thought because my great uncle was his eldest son (plus the memoirs), he should know what his dad did or didn't do. Hmm... Fascinating. Personally, I'm a little leery of the Family search site and organization- they massively butchered my father's death, the who, what, when, where, why and how- I tried to get it corrected- I watched the man die and be buried, and my mom gave me the original documents- LDS refuses to change it, therefore, they are "soliciting" the wrong records about my dad. They even changed his name to my brothers name, and so my brother has also died 25 years ago, even though I spoke to him yesterday! LOL I just recently found out this information about my grandmother's real birthdate and place- Our family sort of has a knarled trunk two generations before me, before it straightens back out and makes sense. SO, when I found this out, about 2 days ago, I was excited to get online and research- I am amazed at what is NOT online anymore. I've had people turn me to the vital records, I just haven't had the chance- sort of in the throws of college exams- I don't know what I was more excited over- the semester ending or finding out this information! I'm glad to hear you've had good luck with vitals. I know Maryland is impossible, that whole confidentiality thing and next of kin. As I said, we have a knarled knot in the two generations, and none are willing to help me on this genealogical journey- that's okay, one way or another, I'll find out! I don't have Ancestry.com. I participate frequently on Genforum's General board, and I have heard some horrible stories for the last 9-10 years about Ancestry in regards to the subscription, etc. I was very leery of them, but I've noticed ALOT of people have been having great success with it. So, I can only sit and wish I had a subscription! My husband has me banned from getting it, too. LOL I wonder who to talk to about getting the border card copy? We don't know where she came in- some say Halifax, some say elsewhere- my understanding is she came through the St. Lawrence seaway, but I was told by others that's impossible, because the St. Lawrence hadn't been built in her time of arrival. I'm glad you found the translation for Daniel- I looked all night last night- apparently there is no Daniels in my neck of the woods in Finland. Even with the translation you found. The only thing that comes close was the David translation you gave. I'll keep your translatin handy for future reference. Did you have any luck finding him this way? I know it's hard- I looked for my Jacob under Jaakko for a long time, until I realized maybe he americanized his name. Keittää |
