I have the J Porteous Douglas booklet, the English Mells came from the York area and moved east to the East Riding of Yorkshire (also a branch in Lincolnshire)during the 1600s (the author is related). The name is unusual in England and closely related to the areas mentioned in the booklet. I can make no useful comment on the name in any other country.
