I have a previous post on here from Jan. 2012 which I now know is substantially incorrect. What I know now is:

The John Prendergast I am seeking (middle initial ??) was born in Dec., 1847 in Portland, Me to parents both born in Ireland (names uncertain but father possibly John, mother possible Katherine). He had a sister, also born in Me. named Isabella +/or Elizabeth, born about 1857.

John migrated to Chicago by 1864 and enlisted in the 134th Illinois Infantry for 100 days. Following discharge in Oct. 1864 he went to NY, where he enlisted in the 9th NY Cavalry in Feb. 1865. He was mustered out in July, 1865 in Va., stating his occupation was "photographer." By 1870 he was in Chicago, employed as a fireman and later as a "fire engineer" for the Chicago F.D.. He married an Anna McFadden in 1871. He raised 5 children, oldest William (my g.f.) b. 1872. He received a Civil War pension in 1901 and died in 1909.
His 4 youngest children lived with his widow well into middle age and had no issue that I can identify. His oldest daughter Catherine Prendergast, was a Chicago school teacher for many years.

His sister Isabella Elizabeth appears in Chicago as well by 1880, married to a Godfrey Baker, b. England. They had 2 children, Godfrey Jr. and Ann. Godfrey married but died in 1940 apparently w/o issue. Ann married a Frank Sutton and they were in Camden, NJ by 1930. They had a child, Frank Sutton Jr., b. about 1913 in Illinois and living with his parents in Camden at age 17 in 1930.

Interested in anyone researching Baker, Sutton, McFadden, Prendergast lines leading to a Maine born ancestor. Please contact me if you have any connections with any of these people.
