Maryland Death records - [pricing may have changed]
Thank you for your inquiry regarding birth, death and marriage records in the State of Maryland.

Please note that there are no civil birth or death certificates for Baltimore City before the year 1875, and for Maryland counties before May 1898. For birth and death records before these years, we rely on church records. You can view the inventory of church records in our possession here:

http://speccol.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/speccol/catalog/religion/cfm/dsp_churches.cfm

Please keep in mind that we do not have the records of all churches in Maryland. In some cases, the church records are incomplete.

Our staff can search the records in our possession for one church of your choice and any available secondary sources for a non-refundable fee of $35.00, which includes a copy of one record, if found.

You can find more ideas about locating evidence of birth on our genealogy page:

http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/refserv/genealogy/html/genstart.html.

Also, you may want to contact a private genealogist or researcher who would be willing to check a variety of churches. You can view our list of these individuals at the following link:

http://guide.mdsa.net/viewer.cfm?page=genealogists.

Our staff can search for death certificates for May 1898-2001, for the counties of Maryland and 1875-2001, for Baltimore City. The non-refundable fee for this service is $25.00 each, and includes a search in one index that covers the jurisdiction and date provided and a certified copy of the record, if found. Please note that all copies are automatically certified at no additional cost.

In order to search for a death record, we need the following information:

1) name of the decedent
2) jurisdiction (county or Baltimore City) where the death occurred
3) approximate date of death.

An index ONLY to death certificates for Baltimore City for the years 1875-1972, is at the following link:
http://guide.mdsa.net/series.cfm?action=viewSeries&ID=CE42. The index for the counties for the years 1898-1944, is located at http://guide.mdsa.net/series.cfm?action=viewSeries&ID=SE58; the index for the years 1945-1968, appears at http://guide.mdsa.net/series.cfm?action=viewSeries&ID=SE8. If prompted for a user name and password, please enter aaco and aaco# respectively.

If you locate an entry and would like a copy, the non-refundable fee remains $25.00.

Access to birth records is restricted for 100 years in Maryland; the records can only be obtained by the person himself/herself, legal guardian or person who has power of attorney. However, the birth certificate of a deceased individual may also be obtained up through 1924, since we do not possess original records after this year, but we will need a copy of the death certificate.

We can search for birth certificates for May 1898-December 1912 for the counties and 1875-December 1912 for Baltimore City without proof of death. The non-refundable fee for this service is $25.00 each, and includes a search in one index that covers the jurisdiction and date provided and a certified copy of the record, if found. Please note that all copies are automatically certified at no additional cost.

Some indices ONLY to birth certificates appear on our website.

Marriage licences begin in 1777. Please note that marriage licenses do not contain much information: usually the names of the bride and groom and the date that the license was issued, not the ceremony.
Sometimes, the name of the religious official who married the couple is listed. Then, this individual can be looked up in the book entitled Directory of Ministers and the Maryland Churches They Served, 1634-1990, by Edna Agatha Kanely to determine the congregation he served.

Marriage records begin circa 1865 and contain somewhat more information, which can vary somewhat by county, including date of licence, date of marriage; name, age, race, occupation, marital status, and residence of the bride and groom; and name, title and residence of religious official.

Marriage certificates begin in 1914 and contain the names, ages residences, and occupations of the couple; and the name and church affiliation of person performing the ceremony.

Please note that marriage records in Maryland do not contain parents'
names or dates of birth of the couple.

Our staff can perform research. The non-refundable fee for this service is $35.00 per couple. Please note that all copies are automatically certified at no additional charge.
