I found your posting quite interesting. When I began my research I had no information about my McGeehan line except the name of my great-grandmother (Bridget McGeehan Higgins) and the suggestion that she may have been born in Pennsylvania. Sometime back I tried to find if there was a connection between Hugh McGeehan and my own Higgins/McGeehan family in Luzerne County, but wasn't able to either prove or disprove any connection.
A couple of things you mentioned caught my eye. The name Shovlin is of particular interest to me. A Shevlin couple were apparently witnesses at the marriage of my great-grandparents Patrick Higgins and Bridget McGeehan in December, 1870. The 1870 census shows that before the marriage, my great-grandfather lived in a rooming house in which one of the other occupants was a Cornelious Shovelin. The McGeehan family lived a few houses away.
I also found the mention of a connection to Bayonne, NJ to be of interest. A great-uncle of mine settled there after leaving Luzerne County. Earlier this year I learned of a family story that there was a judge named McGeehan in Bayonne who was a relative. I haven't yet investigated this, so can't give any more detail on it.
Incidentally, the earliest information I have on my McGeehan line shows that they were in Pennsylvania by 1853, alhtough I haven't yet found them on the 1860 census.
I'd like to hear from you, especially to know if think any of this is worth following up on or if it may be co-incidence.
