Thank you for the information. It is at least a starting point, and helpful to know that some in your family line migrated West. The name Evans is also helpful, as my Wells family intermarried with several of that name, having settled in with a community of Welsh Baptists (if not Welsh themselves, as family tradition has it).
I am interested in the Walls name. There are several Walls families in the SW Indiana area where my Wells family settled. I have often wondered if they might not be a related family -- with either one or the other family group having altered the spelling. The family clings so tenaciously to the Welsh origin (and Wells is not a Welsh name) that I have often thought they may have (very early on) taken the last name of Wales, Welsh, or some variant and added it on to the more typical Welsh double-first name style.
While I don't see an obvious connection at present (my Mary McColley was born ca 1780), it at least provides me with a place to start my search.
