In the mid-1950's my grandmother, Anna McCleary Woods was
helping me with a pedigree of her family. In our conversation she mentioned that the McClearys came from
Galloway. At the time I did not question it as I was just a lad of 15 years.
I know that her ancestor, Robert McCleary (1749-1832)
was born in N. Ireland, died in Gibson Co.Indiana. Did his
ancestors come from Galloway, Scotand? On my Michelin
Road Atlas in southern Scotland there is, "Dumfries &
Galloway." This area is also the lowlands of Scotland where
most of those who removed to Ireland were from. They were
predominantly protestant and were not long in Ireland.
Anyone have any comments on this?
