Elizabeth McAulay, daughter to Walter McAulay of Ardincaple (d1668) and sister-german to Aulay McAulay of Ardincaple (d1675), and widow of Rev. Patrick Colville (d1662), minister at Beith, afterwards remarried (by contract 26 Sept 1666) to Rev. William Maitland, minister at Mauchline. The original marriage contract is held at Glasgow City Archives (Mitchell Library), in the Hamilton of Barns Papers, TD 589/127. Robert Hamilton of Barns was spouse to Elizabeth's sister, Marie McAulay (d 31 Aug 1662) [TD 589/396]. Beith Trinity Church lists a William Maitland M.A. as minister there, 1669-1681, no doubt just a coincidence. Rev. Patrick Colville was minister at Beith, 1645-1662, and had married Elizabeth McAulay in 1658. Her death date was not noted in the Hamilton papers.
"The old manse of Mauchline, of which mention is made in the records of the Presbytery of Ayr as far back as 1646, has been recently pulled down. In the course of operations the workmen have brought to light a stone in good preservation bearing the date 1594, with the letters M.P.P., no doubt the initials of Peter Primrose, who came to Mauchline as parish minister in 1567; also a stone with the date 1730, and the letters W.M., initials no doubt of William Maitland, who was "placed" in 1695." "William Maitland. Entered as physician, in virtue of what degree does not appear. 'Minister of the Gospel, Mauchline.' His daughter, Mrs. Mary Stewart, a widow, was admitted a pensioner in 1744." [Alexander Duncan (1896) Memorials of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1599-1850, no. 202, p. 252].
