I can't help you with your James Maitland and Anne McEwen, but the Muir connection is interesting. While researching my Maitlands in Ohio I came across several Maitland brothers that ended up in Akron Ohio. One of them travelled with a cousin whose last name was Muir. I believe that they are somehow related to my Maitlands primarily because of Milngavie but haven't been able to make the connection. The following is what I have on the Akron Maitlands:

Maitkand, 294 Flower Court, Akron Ohio.

13-James MAITLAND was born abt _____/_____/1880 in Milngavie, Dunbarton, Scotland, died _____/_____/_____ in __________, __________, __________, and was buried _____/_____/_____ in __________, __________, __________.

My gg grandfather James Maitland was born in Campsie Stirlingshire son of Daniel Maitland and Jean Buchanan. I am having the same problem with Daniel and Jean that you are having with James and Anne. My current hupothesis is that Daniel and your James could be brothers.

There are several Archibalds in my line.
