Hello again, Barbara:
I recently discovered that the two boys Sarah (Briggs) MABEE and George MABEE had together were named Hawley and Judson. I have confirmed this through the 1870 census for Van Etten, Chemung Co., NY. The widow Sarah and her two boys were residing at the time with Sarah's parents, father Lyman BRIGGS (ae 59 at time of census) and mother Maria (ae. 63). Judson's age is given as 9, and Hawley's as 7. However, I have been unable to follow the trail of either Judson OR Hawley....does your husband happen to know what happened to either one of them? Who was the father of your husband's grandfather Ernest, who you mentioned in your first message last summer?
I have a small diary in my possession, although I'm not yet sure who wrote it, but it was obviously a woman because she mentions spending time sewing, cleaning, belonging to "Sunshine Club", etc. Most of the notations are from the very late 1920s and throughout the 1930s, a few from the 40s. What is interesting is that Sarah A. (Briggs) Mabee's death is noted in the diary, and there is also a notation of a Hawley Brigg's (NOT Hawley Mabee's) death date. The DORN surname is found often throughout the diary, so I am guessing there was some family connection between the Van Etten Briggs and Dorns....just haven't been able to put it together yet! If you can help me solve the mystery as to whatever happened to Sarah's boys Hawley and Judson BRIGGS, I would appreciate it. Also happy to share any info. I have collected so far. Thanks, Renee Arnold
