Hi, Kent. I guess we're distant cousins. I'm Robert Lockwood Mills; my great-great grandmother on my maternal side was Mary Lyman Lord, born in 1830 and raised in Litchfield (she later married Gorham Boardman of Boston and moved to Brooklyn). I now live in Monroe, CT., but that's coincidental to the Litchfield connection. Mary Lyman Lord's great-grandfather, Lynde Lord, Sr. was sheriff (justice of the peace)in Litchfield circa 1780-90. The Lords' next door neighbor was Rev. Lyman Beecher, whose daughter Harriet B. Stowe wrote a pretty important book, and whose son Henry Ward Beecher was a famous preacher in his own right. Anyway, Lynde Lord's last slave (freed in 1801), named Candace, moved next door after being freed and went to work for the Beechers as a paid domestic. She helped raise Harriet and Henry,whose mother had died young.
