I have been researching the Lyman name for quite a while now, and come to the conclusion that it comes from one of the Lyman ladies that married into that family line that carries Lyman as a given first name or middle name. I have found this to be true of the the maiden name of the ladies that married Lyman men, being carried on as a given or middle name in the Lyman family. It seems like in was more common the further back you go. Lyman Beecher is a son of Esther Lyman who married a Beecher.
