I was with Steve Light in April 1999 when we went in search of the Thomas Lyte portrait - Steve made a slip in his information - the portrait is in the County Museum of Somerset at TAUNTON. The museum is in Taunton castle - and as Steve rightly says, the entrance is opposite a pub called the Rat and Parrot!
There is a print of the portrait opposite page 65 of "A History of Somerset" by Robert Dunning published by Phillimore & Co. Ltd. of Shopwyke Hall, Chichester, Sussed. The ISBN is 0 85033 461 6
The picture shows Thomas Lyte (c1568-1638) wearing the jewel given to him by King James I for compiling the royal pedigree from Brutus. I was under the impression that all copies of this royal pedigree had been destroyed - can you confirm that the one you saw in the British Records Office was the same one?
