I would love sourced material if you have it.
I'm looking at the will of John Light of Halifax and I'm trying to figure out whether I have a cross-link.
This is the will:
Will of John Light --Halifax County VA Will Book No. 2, 1783-1792 (reel 36), pp427-429
December Court 1790---In the name of God Amen. I John Light of the County of Halifax and Parish of Antrim being in a low state of health and weak body but of sound memory blessed be God and knowing there is an appointed time to die, and as an eternal preparative for that important period, do make this my last will and Testament in manner and form following. Ver. Inprimis I commit my soul into the propitious hand of a most Gracious God who gave it and my body to the dust from whence it came to be decently interred at the Discretion of my Executor after mentioned. And as to my worldly possessions that God hath gracious(ly) given me, I do dispose of the same in the following manner Vers I give to my son John Light this Two Hundred Acres Land whereon I live. Item I give said John one cow and calf. Item one bed and Furniture his mother having made a first Choice. Item I give the said John my shoe and Carpenters Tools. Item I lend to my wife Bridgett Light during widowhood or natural life that part of my remaining Estate as she shall think proper for her support, and the Remainder to be divided among my children and after her decease that the remainder thereof be equally divided among my six children by name to William, Jacob and John males, Daughters Hannah Brown, Sarah Childree, Agness Moody, I will that my Old Horse Dick may be continued on the Plantation unsold; I will that an Appraisement may be made on my Estate. I appoint John Light my son and Joseph Moody my son-in-law the sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 23d day of September 1775. Signed and Delivered In presence of William Scott, Mary Scott and Robert (his mark) Neely John (his mark) Light
At a court held for Halifax County the 28th day of June 1790 the written last will and testament of John Light dec'd was exhibited into Court and Proved by the oath of Robert Neely one of the witnesses thereto subscribed and was ordered to be certified. And at another Court held for the said County the 27th December 1790 the same was further proved by the oath of one other witness thereto subscribed an was ordered to be Recorded.
The person I am interested in is the daughter "Sarah Childree". This is more or less a tangent search I am doing.
Childree is often an alternate spelling for Childress and Childers. Now the Lights are my ancestors through my grandfather as follows:
1-John Light m. Bridget [?]
-2-Jacob Light Sr. m. Ann Russell
--3-Obediah Light m. Mary Moore
---4-Kindness Breedlove Light m. Tilman Chamblee (also Tilmon and Chamlee)
----5-Permelia Ann Chamblee m. James B. Wayne
-----6-James Tilman Wayne m. Ida Eudora Prude
------7-Clayborn Philip Wayne m. Alice Jones
Childresses are ancestors to my grandmother as follows:
1-John Childress Sr. m. Rachel Perkins
-2-John Childress Jr. m. Elizabeth Lindsey
--3-Mary Ann "Polly" Childress m. Benjamin Hinds
---4-Margaret Ann Hinds m. Emory Elihu Casner
----5-Edward Von Tress Casner m. Alice Columbia Arnold
-----6-Annie Lola Casner m. Felix Robert Jones
------7-Alice Jones m. Clayborn Philip Wayne
(I'm leaving out dates for simplicity sake and also I don't have a lot of primary source material for the early persons, so take this not as fact but assumptive.)
Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how, if at all, the Lights and the Childresses may have come into contact and where. The counties in which the Lights and Childresses are found are not very far apart but far enough that they weren't neighbors.
So I guess I'm trying to find out who the husband of Sarah Light Childree is.
As far as what else I'm looking for at this point is the early Lights in Virginia. Obviously, I don't know who Bridget, wife of John Light of Halifax, is. I've read through this forum and have taken notes on much of the speculation, but I've not seen anything that indicates who she is. Also, I've seen the George Light data, putative father of John Light, and am wondering if this has been resolved. Are there any wills available for George that show the linkage?
Since this is a branch of my tree, I haven't been very vigorous in pursuing the primary sources. All I have about Obediah (son of Jacob) and Jacob Sr. (son of John) is correspondence data. I'm hopeful that someone has unearthed some primary sources, that I can crib.
I can provide data of the descendants of Permelia Ann Chamlee daughter of Tilman Chamlee and Kindness B. Light, but that may or may nor be of interest to you. Anyway, anything you want to offer me, I'd appreciate.
