Another idea to add to the others: In the era of which you speak sometimes a biography, newspaper article, or obituary would state the person's party affiliation (though not their voting record).
You could also research local organizations (or local chapters of organizations) in his area. You may find some have archived membership lists. Membership in an organization reflects an aspect of the person's character, beliefs, opinions, perhaps including political opinions. Tedious work, and might not pan out, I know...
