I wonder if he was Abner? I did see an Abner Ratcliff online somewhere - not your A.D. (wrong time frame), but maybe a family name?
I thought this was interesting:
African-American Records, Conveyances, Book C, Catahoula Parish, LA:
2 Jan 1832
Eli A. Ratcliff brought into the State from Mississippi a negro slave, Andrew, about 22, light black complexion, about 6 feet, with two scars on his left cheek. Andrew belongs to his father Benjamin Ratcliff of Mississippi, and was raised by him. He was brought into the State for the use of Benjamin Ratcliff who is moving here.
