The connection with Belgium begins with the 1880 Census for Rapides Parish LA. (ED 37, SD 2, PAGE 17 lines 3 - 8). Living in the household of William LeGras is his father Michael LeGras age 59 who is listed as being born in Indiana and his parents being born in Belgium. These parents are Michel and Amelia, who are found in St Louis, MO in the 1830 census, and in LA in the 1850 census. Their names and family are found in "Earl Fischer's Database of St. Louisans" with the children being christened in the Old Cathedral.
My interest in Belgians and Indiana begins in 1820 which is earlier than most of the listed immigrations. The two individuals I believe immigrated from Belgium prior to 1820 are Michel LeGras and Amelia Masquelin. Michael LarGrass is listed in the 1820 Indiana Census in Jefferson County page 290. In that household are two non-naturalized foreigners.
Any information or leads to verify the country of origin of Michel LeGras and Amelia Masquelin or other information on this LeGras family would be appreciated.
