The first settler in the county was (Squire Holman family) William Holman. They came from Madison county, Ky. and settled just a few miles south of Old Franklin (Howard county, Mo.) in 1817. In the spring of 1818 they moved to Silver Spring (now Randolph county). His brother Joseph Holman and James Dysart were also early settlers.
