Named for Thomas Nelson (1738-1789), signer of the Declaration of Independence and commander of Virginia State forces during Revolutionary War. Remembered for ordering cannons to fire on the British headquarters at the Battle of Yorktown -- the British having set up headquarters in Nelson's own home. Went broke using his own money to pay public debts in cause of independence.
