Mike, you seem to be a serious researcher, so I've done a little looking. I did find Matthew and Jane in deeds, and there was a William. I do not, however, find a Matthew in the 1810 census, nor a William. Tell me a little more of what you know, such as location in Va. and names of children of William as well as where he lived that you're positive of. I have a great many published transcriptions of Nelson Co. records that might give you some lead if indeed your family was in Nelson Co. at some time. Write to me at email@example.com. I live in Lexington, about 60 miles from Bardstown. I grew up in Bloomfield, another town in Nelson Co.
If you happen to trace your people back to the right part of Va., I have a fair number of Va. records also.
Matthew (with wife Jane)was in Nelson Co. in the first tax list (1785), so he could have come even earlier before Nelson was formed as a county. I haven't checked everything yet, but it would appear his father could have been James.
Some Rogers was the architect of the Catholic cathedral in Bardstown, but I don't know much about that family at this point.
