"There was a murder committed in Hopkinsville a fiew days before my arrival home[.] Obadiah Woodson was shot by Samuel Gordon[.] they were at variance for some time[.] they were both at Court that day early in the morning[.] woodson swore that he would kill Sam Gordon[,]Tom Moor [,] or Major Sam Jones before sun set[.] accordingly after Court had adjourned he met with Gordon in the Court house and attacked him with a dirk in his hand[.] Gordon ordered him to stand back or he would shoot him[.] drawing a pistol out of his pocket[.] Calling to the people around to take notice[.] Woodson still rushing at him Gordon gave back untill he came to the wall and could give back no further[.] he then presented his pistol and woodson still comeing at him he put three rifle balls in his breast[.] woodson stabed him three times after being shot and walked across the steet before he fell[.] he lived three days[.] the balls was taken out on his back and the wad out of his liver[.] he wished to see all with whom he had been at variance and be at peace with all men before he left this world[.] his penitence acationed a greate deal of sympathy[.] Gordon was tried and acquited"
