The local historical/genealogical society should be able help:

They should know of newspapers available for the period or books abstracting articles for the period in question. You can also search a database such as WorldCat and it will give you a list of available period newspapers and what repositories have them on microfilm. Maybe your local library subscribes to WorldCat. Keep in mind that it isn't 100% complete. An incident like this might have appeared in larger papers outside of the immediate area. You just never know. Personally, I would start with the local society. Rick
