First of all, Joe and Peggy were childless.
They lived in a very impressive home in Park Hills Ky., overlooking the Ohio River, before they moved to Florida. I think they bought that home during WW II. Before that they lived in an apartment behind the drug store.

Joe and my father were a good team. Joe was not a registered pharmacist and needed dad to legally operate the drug store. My dad, on the other hand, lost his own drug store during the depression, and had no desire to own his own business again. The hours were long, 9 am till 11 pm with two hours off for lunch and dinner, Monday thru Saturday. Dad was off at 1 pm on Wed., and at 6 pm on Friday.

During the years when gambling was open, they had a nickle machine and a dime machine. They also had a complete line of liquor. There was 2 wide open bookies one block away, and often women who didn't want to go there ask dad to place their bets for them. If the odds were right, dad covered them himself. Call that a drug store? I think it was a gold mine.

Things have really changed here. Gambling is gone, the small drug stores are gone, and private banks are gone. I'm sure the same is true in your area.

I will go by the store and take pictures for you, but we need a creative way for me to send them. I think I can post attachments on Roots Web. I don't know how to do it on Gen Web. I will check it out.

Did you know there was another Shulkers Pharmacy in Ft. Thomas? I think it is still there under that name. I will check it out also. I didn't know about Joe's family ties with the Schulker family and often wondered why he operated under the Schulker name.

From the information I have, I assume Joseph F. was the son of Joseph and Carrie.
