Teri,
I will do my best to answer your questions.
"Most significant duty assignment" means the unit the Veteran served with. There should be an entry there indicating a unit. Do you have any uniform shoulder patches? These would indicate unit.

Combat Infantry Badge, (CIB) is one of the most coveted decorations an Infantryman receives. It is awarded for being under enemy fire for a period of 30 days or more.
Purple Heart speaks for itself. It is awarded for being wounded in action. It was designed for, and awarded to, George Washingtons troops during the Revolutionary War.
Good Conduct Medal is awarded for just that, Good Conduct. If memory serves me correctly, for a period of at least 3 years.
Distinguished Unit Emblem w/Oak Leaf Cluster is awared to a unit for distinguished service, usually in combat. The Oak Leaf clusters are added each time the award is given. In your case, the cluster designates the award was earned twice.
Army Occupation of Japan was awarded to the troops that were on occupation duty in Japan after WWII.
Korean Service Medal was awarded for service in Korea during the war, June 25, 1950-July 27, 1953 inclusive. The Bronze Stars are referred to as "Battle Stars". These were issued for campaignes designated as Spring-Summer, Fall-Winter, etc. 3 means 3 campaigns were recognized.
United States Service Medal is issued in reconition for service to the United States during war time.
Marksman badge, w/carbine device is awarded for proficiency with the weapons indicated. He was awarded the medal for qualification with the M-1 rifle and also qualified w/ the carbine.
Korea 28 November 50, if it shows in the area of the DD214 where the awards are listed, itis the date the award was awarded.

I want to tell you here that these medals and decorations are most significant. You should be proud of the contribution to your country of your loved one.

If I can be of further help to you, please let me know.
