The clay idea doesn't give me the warm fuzzies, I'd think you'd do better with dark chalk dust. I don't have the equipment to do this, but I've heard using an infra-red camera sometimes shows carved letters that can't be seen with the naked eye. I'd be the same kind of infra-red the police would use to reconstruct accidents.
