Thanks, Alex. Agree entirely that it is more likely a form of Untung (lucky). Bernadette is very lucky to have the information she has of him. Who knows how he came to become a slave or where he was from? Apparently the Dutch gave him the surname "Van Batavia", which is just where they acquired him. He mustn't have accepted it though, as he reverted to his own name Ontong, later.
