Have just discovered that Peter Moir, James' Taylor's Laurencekirk cousin who enthused him about moving to Ceylon to lead a more exciting life, was indeed born around 1821, as I assumed in my previous posting:

1st Apr 1881       Census
Peter Moir, M, Head, married, age 59, born Scotland; occupation Ceylon Coffee Planter
Peter Moir       Lanka Cottage       1881 Census
East Grinstead, Sussex
1st Apr 1881       Census
Margaret Moir, F, Wife, married, age 57, born Scotland

There was, BTW, a typo in the previous posting - I meant the 1841 and not the 1941 census.
