I researched this topic about 30 years ago. Saturday evening, January 19, 1907, a westbound passenger train pulled into Sandford, IN alongside freight train number 99, stopped on the sidebed. The freight train had three cars carrying some unknown explosive. As the third car of the passenger train passed the freight cars an explosion occured. The stationhouse clock recorded the time of the disaster-8:50 pm. Thirty people were killed outright or as the result of their injuries.
