Here is my mystery; I hope someone may have a clue for me:

The 1880 Cass County, IN census cites Jacob Collins, born 1831 in Virginia (may now be West Virginia). His parents are listed also as being born in Virginia. He is widowed, and has a daughter, Ema N. Collins (b. 1867 in Indiana) living at home; her info states that both her parents (Jacob and his late wife) were born in Virginia.

I believe that Jacob is related to my gggreat-grandmother, Mary Collins Lamb. She is the daughter of Paul (b. 1798, Lewis, (W)VA) and Susannah Waggoner (b. 1794, Lewis, (W)VA), and she was born in Virginia (or West Virginia) in 1827. She married John Lamb in Ohio in 1844; in the 1850 census, John and Mary are living in Wells County, Indiana; Paul and Susan Collins are listed as living next door with sons William and John. Mary's father, Paul, was the son of George (son of John and Hannah Cozad Collins) and Abigail Ball Smith Collins.

In the 1880 census, Mary is widowed and living in Cass County near Jacob Collins with four of her children. After living nearly 30 years in Wells County, I have to believe that some connection to Jacob was the reason she moved. Mary's daughter, Emma, moved back to Wells County the following year to marry George Bailey-my great-great grandfather.

Please let me know if you can help me prove or disprove this connection.
