Douglas County- Bourbon Township

Charles A. REEVES - was born December 23, 1827 in White County, Ill., in which his parents settled in 1818. His father was engaged in merchandising; he died in Wayne County, February, 1881, aged eighty-three years. C.A. Reeves, at the age of 22, bought a farm of forty acres, and later bought other land, increasing it to 200 acres. This he sold for $350, then removed to Missouri, where he remained during the winter, then returned to White County and bought 200 acres, which he afterward sold for $1500, and moved to Moultrie County. Here he purchased forty acres, and later other land, making in all 200 acres; this he traded for property in Arthur; removing here he engaged in the lumber, coal and agricultural implements business. This he recently disposed of; he now owns 280 acres in Moultrie County, and fifty acres in Douglas County, also two dwellings, a lumber and coal house, a large warehouse, and thirty-five lots in Arthur. He was married, in 1849, to Miss Elizabeth Wood, of Wayne County, who died in 1851. In 1855, he married Miss Mary A. Hunsaker, of Edgar County. They have four children, three sons and one daughter. When Mr. Reeves was first married he had nothing; he borrowed $2.50 to pay for the marriage license and the Squire.
