I'm trying to determine who the parents are of one Mary "Mayme" E. BAIRD who m. William Jennings Bryan (the famous orator, lawyer, etc.) on Oct 1, 1881, in Perry, Pike Co., IL. Mary E. BAIRD BRYAN also went to law school and the couple later lived in Omaha, NE, where Wm. Jennings Bryan eventually became editor of the Omaha World Herald, in addition to his other political & legal activities (presidential candidate, the Monkey Trial, etc.).
According to my research, Mary E. Baird Bryan was a granddaughter of one Darius Dexter of RI (1784-1866), who m1. Mehitable Winsor, m2. Mrs. Gertrude (Helms) Shoemaker [widow], m3. Mrs. Elizabeth (Parker) Edom [widow].
Other than two sons, Perry Dexter b. ca. 1822 and who res. Perry, IL 1860 & 1880, and Harrison Dexter, who resided in Cincinatti, OH, I don't have any other information on Darius' other children.
If his granddaughter Mary E. BAIRD m. Wm. Jennings Bryan, then she must have been a child of a daughter of Darius Dexter who married a Baird in Perry or vicinity.
Does anyone know who Mary's parents were and how they were related to Darius Dexter, i.e., which of his 3 wives was her mother?
